Brexit would affect our services

If Britain leaves the EU, it will affect both how work abroad is insured (for example, the validity of A1 certificates) and how pensions are applied for. At the moment, we prepare for different scenarios.

We monitor the situation and will inform you of changes on this page as soon as new information becomes available.

FAQs about Brexit and social security

What happens to my A1 certificate after Brexit?

Question: I am working in Britain at the moment. I have an A1 certificate that is valid until the end of June 2020. What will happen to my certificate after Brexit?

Answer: It depends on whether there will a Brexit deal or not. Your work situation makes a difference, as well (are you working only in Britain or in several EU countries?). If there is no Brexit deal, your A1 certificate will not be valid in Britain as of the date of exit. We will inform more as the possible date for the exit is confirmed. You can also contact the Finnish Centre for Pensions or Kela to ask more about your case.

Posted to Great Britain - what should I do?

Question:

I have been posted to Great Britain as of the beginning of April  until April 2021. What should I do? What if I start as a posted worker later than April 2019?

Answer:

You (if you are self-employed)/Your employer (if you are an employee) can apply for an A1 certificate from the Finnish Centre for Pensions. If Brexit becomes a fact, it also affect the A1 certificate process. If there is no deal, the A1 certificate cannot be granted for a period after Brexit takes effect, and an already granted A1 certificate will no longer be valid after Brexit takes effect.

Question:

I have come to work in Finland in September 2018. My A1 certificate is valid until September 2020. Will I remain covered by British social security throughout the validity period of my A1 certificate?

Answer:

Your situation depends on whether a Brexit deal (including a transition period) is reached or not. If there is no deal, your A1 certificate will cease to be valid as of the date that Brexit takes effect. In that case, contact the British authority that issued your A1 certificate.
