Special pension providers
The pension provision of farmers, grant recipients and sailors is handled by special pension providers.
The Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution Mela
Mela handles the social security of farmers and grant recipients. It insures farmers, fishermen, reindeer herders and grant recipients.
At the end of 2017, Mela insured 62,190 people, including grant recipients. It paid out pensions to around 117,400 people. The operations of Mela are governed by the Farmers’ Pensions Act.
The Seafarer’s Pension Fund
The Seafarer’s Pension Fund is a pension provider that handles the pensions of sailors employed by Finnish merchant vessels sailing in international waters, as well as the sailors working on ice-breakers. In 2017, the Seafarer’s Pension Fund had around 7,350 members and paid pensions to 8,300 people.
The Seafarer’s Pension Fund grants and pays out earnings-related pensions to sailors under the Seafarer’s Pensions Act.
