The employee pension contribution is being standardised

In 2026, earnings-related pension contributions will change: in the future, all employees will pay the same amount in pension contribution, regardless of age.

Wages on the rise – young people face increasing barriers to entering the labour market

In 2024, employees’ median monthly earnings were 3,208 euros, an increase of 3.3 per cent from 2023. Despite this positive development in earnings, concerns remain over the difficulties young people are facing when trying to access the labour market. According to earnings statistics of the Finnish Centre for Pensions, the number of new employees covered by earnings-reated pension insurance has decreased around 10 per cent annually.

Our latest study shows that experiencing financial problems during the early and mid-life course does not necessarily bear negative consequences for one’s pension income in old age. However, a better understanding of the connections between economic wellbeing in earlier and later life helps in shaping better policies for ageing societies.

Many people are unclear about how employment should be insured. The situation is clear from the point of view of earnings-related pension law: people who carry out work for pay are insured either as employees or as self-employed.

Reforming earnings-related pensions

The final report of the tripartite working group was published on 31 January 2025. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has begun the legislative drafting process.
