The assets of the Finnish earnings-related pension system continued to grow in 2025 – for a third year in a row. At the end of the year, the assets amounted to 290 billion eros, up by nearly 6 per cent from 2024. The data stems from the recent statistics on money flows of the Finnish Centre for Pensions.

The favourable investment returns of pension providers led to growing pension assets in 2025. Thanks to investment returns, pension assets grew by nearly 20 billion euros.

“Pension assets have grown favourably for three years in a row. The nominal growth has been nearly 20 per cent since 2022. Now the assets roughly equal the GDP of one year in Finland”. explains mathematician Henna Iire from the Finnish Centre for Pensions.

Private sector pension assets were 185 billion euros and public sector pension assets 105 billion euros at year-end 2025.

Earnings-related pension assets include all assets intended to cover earnings-related pension liabilities.  Investment capital is the main component of pension assets. Outstanding insurance contributions are included in the pension assets.

37.2 billion euros paid out in pensions

In 2025, about 7.2 billion euros of pension assets were used to pay earnings-related pensions, up by more than 4 per cent compared to 2024.

In 2025, earnings-related pensions were paid to the amount of 37.2 billion euros, up by around 2.5 per cent from 2024. The total pension expenditure grew by just under one billion euros, which was mainly due to indexation of pensions in payment.

Income from pension contributions 28.2 billion

The earnings-related pension system recorded an income of 33.7 billion euros in 2025, of which 28.2 billion euros were in the form of insurance contributions. Compared to 2024, the pension contribution income increased by more than half a billion euros.

The income of the earnings-related pension system consists of pension contributions, the Employment Fund’s contribution and State contributions. Expenditure consists of pensions, total operating costs and taxes.

The figures are preliminary at this point. The exact figures will be presented in June when the final money flow is confirmed.
