Applying for a pension from abroad when you live in Finland
If you live in Finland and apply for a pension from an EU/EEA country, Switzerland or a country with which Finland has signed a social security agreement, we function as the liaison body. For more detailed information on how to apply for a pension and on pensions from different countries, go to Työeläke.fi.
We get the applications for pensions from abroad either straight from the pension applicant, a Finnish earnings-related pension insurance company or Kela. We compile the required information and transfer the application for a pension from abroad to the country in question.
The foreign pension authority sends its pension decision both to the pension application and to us. We register the information on the decision (excl. the pension amount) and transfer the decisions to the pension insurance companies and Kela.

Pension application handling times abroad
Pension application handling times are longer abroad than in Finland: from six months to several years. We recommend that you apply for your pension from abroad approximately six months before you wish to start getting the pension. Contact the pension authorities of the different countries to find out more detailed information on their handling times.
Applying for a pension from Finland when you live abroad
As a rule, if you live in another country than Finland and want to apply for a pension from Finland, submit your application to the liaison body (usually the pension authority) of the country in which you live. It will transfer your application to Finland, to Kela. The application process runs differently in different countries.
